A cylinder that drifts down under load or leaves a wet ring on the rod is telling you the seals are done. On a skid steer, a loader, a telehandler or an implement, that is a seal kit, a clean bench and about two hours if the rod is straight and the chrome is good. The cylinder comes off, gets pulled apart on the truck, the gland and piston seals are replaced, the bore and rod are checked, and it goes back on and cycles under load.
When the rod is scored, bent or the chrome is flaking, a reseal will not hold. We tell you that before the kit goes in. Large cylinders that need honing or rod rechroming go to a shop, and we say which shop and what it usually costs rather than pretend the truck can do it.
Reseal on the truck, step by step
- Block the load, relieve pressure and cap the lines. Nothing comes apart with the boom in the air.
- Pull the cylinder, unscrew the gland and slide the piston and rod out on a clean bench.
- Inspect the rod for scoring and straightness and the bore for wear. This is the decision point.
- Fit the new gland, piston and wiper seals from the correct kit, reassemble and torque.
- Reinstall, fill, bleed and cycle under load. Check for drift with the machine loaded.
Drift versus leak: what each one means
External leaking at the rod is the gland seal or wiper. Internal bypass, where the cylinder drifts but nothing leaks out, is the piston seal, or a scored bore letting fluid past. Drift can also be a control valve, not the cylinder at all, and a five minute test with the lines capped tells which. We do that test before we sell a reseal.
