Steel hydraulic lines are the part nobody stocks. On a dump body, a loader frame, a press or a lift truck mast, the rigid tube sections run where a hose would chafe, and after fifteen Wisconsin winters of road salt they rust from the outside in, usually right under a clamp where water sits. When one lets go the dealer answer is a part number with a lead time. Our answer is a bender and a flaring tool on the truck.
We carry hydraulic grade steel tube in the common sizes, 1/4 in through 1 in, and make 37 degree JIC flares, O ring face ends and tube to hose transitions on site. The new section is bent to the original path, clamped the same way, and if the original clamp trapped water we say so and change how it is held.
How a hard line job goes
A single section usually takes one to two hours on site.
- Relieve the circuit, drain the section and remove the failed tube with its fittings.
- Measure the run, the bend angles and the end types, and check the mating ports for damage.
- Cut, deburr and bend new tube on the truck, then flare or fit the ends.
- Install, clamp, fill, bleed and cycle the circuit under load to check for weep.
Tube versus hose: which one goes back on
Sometimes the right repair is to replace a short rigid line with a hose assembly, especially where the original tube was rubbing or where the routing has changed. Sometimes it is the reverse: a hose that keeps chafing through belongs as a tube. We tell you which one and why. What we do not do is bend a tube to fit a hose bracket and hope.
