Oshkosh Hydraulic Line Repair makes hydraulic hose assemblies on the truck for tractors, skid steers, forklifts, dump trucks, excavators and marina lifts across the Oshkosh area.
A hydraulic hose has a life. Two wire braid hose on a tractor loader lasts years, then it weeps at the crimp, then it lets go, usually under load. The fix is not complicated but it does need the right hose, the right ends and a crimper that is set to the right die, and none of those live in a parts store bag.
Our truck carries SAE 100R1 and R2 two wire hose from 1/4 in to 1 in, R16 compact two wire for tight routing, and R12 and R13 four and six wire for the high pressure circuits on excavators, crushers and clamp trucks. Ends are stocked in JIC 37 degree, ORFS, NPT, code 61 and code 62 SAE flange, and DIN metric for European lift trucks. We measure the old assembly end to end, match the ends by thread gauge, and crimp to the manufacturer die chart.
What a hose call looks like
Most single hose calls take under an hour on site once the truck arrives. Here is the sequence.
- You call with the machine, the hose location and where the machine is sitting.
- The truck arrives, the machine is shut down, blocked and the circuit is relieved of pressure.
- The old hose comes off, gets measured and the ends are identified by thread and seat.
- A new assembly is cut, fitted and crimped on the truck, then routed with the same clamps and guards.
- The circuit is cycled under load, the crimp is checked for weep, and the old hose leaves with us.
Why the hose failed matters more than the hose
A hose that failed from age gets replaced like for like. A hose that failed from chafe, heat, a too tight bend or a twisted install will fail again in months if it is copied. Before we crimp we look at the routing: did it rub a frame rail, sit on an exhaust, get pulled tight by a cylinder stroke, or twist at install? A hose guard, a longer length, or a swivel end is usually a few dollars and doubles the life.
Fluid injection is the other reason to stop and look. Hydraulic fluid escaping a pinhole at 2,000 psi will go through skin. Never feel for a leak with a hand.
